How to Make Burritos for the Homeless

December 16, 2008

Making burritos for others in need is easy, affordable and convenient.  You may be wondering, “Where do I start?”  or “I’ve never made a hundred burritos before.  How do I know how much to buy of each ingredient?”

If feeding burritos to the homeless is new to you, let me assure you, you’re in store for some real fun!

Okay, step one is purchasing the ingredients.  “Food City,” here in Arizona is a great place to do your grocery shopping for burrito ingredients.

What do the burritos consist of?  How much of each item do you purchase?

13-15 Cans of Sun Vista Black Beans - Net WT 30oz
5lbs. White Rice
60 Scrambled Eggs
Tapatio Sauce
Teaspoon of Salt
Vegetable Oil
White Flour Tortillas

If you cook up these ingredients you should be able to produce just about 100 burritos.  We cook the rice in a large pot.  You’ll want to start the rice first being that this will take the longest to prepare.  Once the rice is started, you’ll want to begin placing the black beans into a different large pot.  While you’re filling the pot you’ll also want to mash the beans up (of course this is your decision - I simply enjoy them mashed up).  We also put about a Teaspoon of salt and two Tablespoons of vegetable oil into the pot with the black beans, stir it up.

Now that the rice and beans are cooking, we’ll then begin to scramble the eggs up in a frying pan.  As you finish preparing the eggs the rice and beans should be about finished, maybe 5-15 minutes longer depending upon how quickly you work and how high you have the stove on.

Once you have the three main ingredients cooked and ready.  Get out one more frying pan to cook the tortillas on.  The burritos are wrapped up in a sheet of foil with a paper towel.  With a group of people you can create an assembly line.

The tortilla cooker passes them to the individual with the foil and paper towels who will bean up the tortilla, then pass it to the person who is going place rice on it, then to the eggs, then the Tapatio, and then the person who wraps it all up.

Once you have the burritos wrapped and ready to go place them in coolers.  The coolers are good because they keep the hot for a long period of time.

We hope this helps you get a better idea as to how the process for making 100 burritos takes place.  In the future we’ll have video and/or photos to better show you how the step by step process develops.
