How to Make Burritos for the Homeless

December 16, 2008

Making burritos for others in need is easy, affordable and convenient.  You may be wondering, “Where do I start?”  or “I’ve never made a hundred burritos before.  How do I know how much to buy of each ingredient?”

If feeding burritos to the homeless is new to you, let me assure you, you’re in store for some real fun!

Okay, step one is purchasing the ingredients.  “Food City,” here in Arizona is a great place to do your grocery shopping for burrito ingredients.

What do the burritos consist of?  How much of each item do you purchase?

13-15 Cans of Sun Vista Black Beans - Net WT 30oz
5lbs. White Rice
60 Scrambled Eggs
Tapatio Sauce
Teaspoon of Salt
Vegetable Oil
White Flour Tortillas

If you cook up these ingredients you should be able to produce just about 100 burritos.  We cook the rice in a large pot.  You’ll want to start the rice first being that this will take the longest to prepare.  Once the rice is started, you’ll want to begin placing the black beans into a different large pot.  While you’re filling the pot you’ll also want to mash the beans up (of course this is your decision - I simply enjoy them mashed up).  We also put about a Teaspoon of salt and two Tablespoons of vegetable oil into the pot with the black beans, stir it up.

Now that the rice and beans are cooking, we’ll then begin to scramble the eggs up in a frying pan.  As you finish preparing the eggs the rice and beans should be about finished, maybe 5-15 minutes longer depending upon how quickly you work and how high you have the stove on.

Once you have the three main ingredients cooked and ready.  Get out one more frying pan to cook the tortillas on.  The burritos are wrapped up in a sheet of foil with a paper towel.  With a group of people you can create an assembly line.

The tortilla cooker passes them to the individual with the foil and paper towels who will bean up the tortilla, then pass it to the person who is going place rice on it, then to the eggs, then the Tapatio, and then the person who wraps it all up.

Once you have the burritos wrapped and ready to go place them in coolers.  The coolers are good because they keep the hot for a long period of time.

We hope this helps you get a better idea as to how the process for making 100 burritos takes place.  In the future we’ll have video and/or photos to better show you how the step by step process develops.

Frequently Asked Questions

December 16, 2008

Why am I visiting Help Another Soul.org?

If you have been reading the LA Times or paying attention to the news lately, you would notice an alarming increase of men, women, and children living on the streets of Los Angeles - 94,000 in LA County to be exact. We have found an answer to assist in solving this issue. If you have any compassion for the less fortunate as we do. You’re probably thinking yeah but how can I help?
Chances are you have a printer. We have created a strategic partnership with the best printer supply company on the Internet. Each time you need to order ink or toner supplies, visit this site. Click on the banner and begin shopping for all your printer needs. For example, let’s say that you ordered $100 of printer ink and toner. 10% (or $10 in this case) of your order will go directly to helping men, women, and children living on the streets of Los Angeles. Please make a HUGE mental note. Money will only be going to the homeless that are placed after clicking on the banner from this site and must be clicked each time you re-order ink. To receive the 10% credit for the men, women, and children living on the streets you must start your order purchase here each and every time. We thank you in advance to making steps to insure your re-order process beginning here.
P.S. - PHONE ORDERS will NOT receive the 10% credit either.

How does this program work exactly?

When you click on the coupon, a “cookie” (not one that you eat) is stored on your computer. It has a code that identifies that you found out about the ink website through “Help Another Soul.org” Don’t worry these “cookies” do not have anything to do with virus’s or stay on your computer permanently. (Please keep in mind you already have many on your computer whether you know it or not.) When you make a purchase AFTER clicking on the link from this website, 10% of your order (minus the shipping) will automatically go into a special account to be distributed to those in need. The 10% will go to help the homeless, children in need, and other various organizations with financial needs.

Do I need to come back here for each order I make?

Yes, please type in our URL www.HelpAnotherSoul.org (no spaces when typing in your browser) and click through to the Ink website to ensure that 10% of your order will be going to help another in need.

Do we get to see how much money is donated each month?

Yes, in the past we posted checks to the homeless shelter on the link “$$’s Raised” that shows everybody how much of an impact we are all making for those in need on a regular basis!! We’re going to begin scanning the “receipt” from PATH due to security issues involved with posting checks online.

Where does the 10% of all our orders go exactly?

We are partnering with various organizations (Example - People Assisting the Homeless - PATH) in the Los Angeles county that work in assisting the homeless. The money is going to the organizations in which we feel led to send money to at the time. Once the money is mailed you will get to see where the money donated for that particular month and how much was sent.

How can I get more involved and help out?

Great question, drop us an email and let us know about your thoughts on ways we can help you make a difference too. We would love to hear from you.

How long has “Help Another Soul.org” been around?

The idea to help others in this particular way has been on our brains for a while now. The actual site and concept just recently began taking shape in October of 2005. The ink company in which we are partnered with has been around since 1999. 4inkjets is the best ink supply company on the Internet, they offer the best quality, prices and customer service. Our relationship with the owner of this company has been in place even prior to its doors opening for business in 1999. These are very exciting times and with your help the excitement will only grow!

What is your organizational status right now?

We are an “aspiring” non-profit organization. We don’t intend on ever making a profit and currently have not made any profit for this cause. However, it takes time and resources (money) to be officially recognized by the state and federal government to receive the title of “non-profit” organization. As awareness and support grow for this idea of “Help Another Soul” so will our business status. This is a ministry to create financial resources to be given back to the poverty stricken individuals.

Please contact us with any comments, questions or ideas you may have to meet your needs or the needs of those we are working to assist - the men, women and children living on the streets.
